Shawty Redd (born Demetrius Stewart) is an Atlanta-based record producer, rapper, and songwriter. In November 2007, Atlanta-based producer Shawty Redd changed the face of Hip-Hop music when he crafted “Sensual Seduction,” the first single from multi-platinum rapper Snoop Dogg’s Ego Trip. In addition to being a smash hit, marked the official mainstream acceptance of this brazen young producer’s return to a more complex Hip-Hop sound, one which borrows from other genres and utilizes a full spectrum of instrumentation. “In Atlanta, we were already known to do records like this, going back to the days of Kilo Ali and Raheem The Dream,” he explains. “And everyone said that type of music wouldn’t come back in style. By Snoop doing it, he made it okay for everyone else to do it.” Prior to the West Coast co-sign, Shawty Redd, who always considered himself as much artist as producer, kept his more experimental tracks to himself.

When Shawty Redd landed his first placement at age seventeen, his success had already been a long time in the making. Like many influential artists, Redd was first introduced to music through religion as a child. By the age of 6 he was playing multiple instruments masterfully, including the piano and drums. Already his life’s passion, music became his salvation. It wasn’t long before trouble found him and, when granted a second chance, Redd made a promise to his Grandmother that he would not need a third.

His career in music began soon after, when he landed an internship with event promoters Twin Productions. In addition to learning the ins-and-outs of stage and sound set-up, the position allowed him to interact with some of the most successful southern artists of the time. In 2000, at the age of 17, Shawty Redd produced Atlanta artist Drama’s entire debut album, the RIAA-certified gold selling Causin’ Drama, which spawned the hit single “Left, Right, Left.” He parlayed his success with Drama into opportunities for his protégés the 404 Soldiers and a placement on the soundtrack to 2001’s Save The Last Dance.

Soon thereafter, Shawty Redd forged a friendship with label owner turned reluctant rapper Young Jeezy. Driven by each other’s determination to attain success, the two opened a new chapter in Atlanta’s musical history. At a point when Redd felt he might be ready to abandon the business of music, Jeezy approached him with an offer to purchase some tracks. Those twelve track became Jeezy’s critically acclaimed mixtape, Streetz Iz Watchin’, which catapulted the rapper to mainstream attention and a deal with Def Jam Records.

Redd’s signature sound became synonymous with “trap” or “dope boy music.” With production credits for artists like Gucci Mane and Maceo, as well as some of the most popular tracks on Jeezy’s label debut Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101, including “Trap or Die,” “Air Forces,” and “Get Ya Mind Right,” it wasn’t long before he found his multi-layered, drum-laden style imitated. His popularity in the South also led to placements with Pastor Troy, Eightball & MJG, and of course on Young Jeezy’s sophomore effort The Inspiration. By 2006, he found it necessary to expand his production repertoire to incorporate his musical upbringing, creating more melodious songs like Black Jak’s “Ride and Swerve.” and Big Kuntry’s debut single “Da Baddest".

Shawty Redd continues to celebrate milestones in his career. In addition to also landing the second single on Kuntry’s album, My Turn To Eat’s “We Here,” Shawty Redd is also the man behind Jeezy’s “Who Dat,” the third single from 2008’s The Recession. Christopher Gholson, better known by his stage name Drumma Boy, is a music producer, singer and rapper from Memphis, Tennessee. HOW TO MAKE RAP BEATS

1. Purchase a beat-making software program. There are a number of different programs out on the market being used today to create rap beats. A few of the most popular ones include Reason and FL Studios. If you are brand new to hip hop production, you will want to chose a program that is user-friendly. A good program to start out using is FL Studios Producer Edition. You will also need a MIDI keyboard, which will enable you to control sounds in the program and record your melodies.

2. Open your program and set the tempo or speed of your beat. These programs will allow you to set the pace of your beat depending on the type of beat you want to make. The average hip hop beat typically runs about 85 to 95 BPM (Beats Per Minute). If you want to make a more aggressive, faster paced beat, a good BPM would be 110 to 116.

3. Download drum sound kits compatible with your program. You can find a number of free drum kit sounds to use in your program at WarBeats.Com. Once you have your drum sounds picked out, load them into the program and then load them into the step sequencer to use in your beat.

4. Create an original drum beat using a bass drum sound, a snare, a hi-hat and various other percussion instruments. Program the bass drum to hit on the first and third beat of the measure, with the snare hitting on the first beat of the second measure. Program the hi-hat anyway you want that keeps a good rhythm.

5. Download a few virtual instruments and load them into the beat making software. These are programs that are used to recreate actual instrument sounds like pianos, orchestras and synthesizers. You can find some of these for free; some you will have to pay for. You do get what you pay for, so if you get a virtual instrument for free, the sound quality may not be good.

6. Record a bass line and melody for your beat. Use the MIDI controller to play your virtual instruments and create a melody comprised of chords and scales.

7. Arrange your beat, mix it and save it as an MP3. Arrange the different melodies and drum variations into verses and choruses and then mix all the instruments to give the beat a professional sound. Save the beat as an MP3.

HOW TO MAKE HIP HOP BEATS

1. First things first ... decide what kind of track you want to make. Whether it be up-beat, pop, dark and gangsta, mellow, and so on. Set the tempo (speed) of the track to a moderate speed so you'll be able to construct the track with some ease.

2. If you don't have a melody in mind, what you should always do is start off with a drum line pattern. This consists of a drum pattern, a clap, hats, and/or any other percussion instruments. Based on the time signature (usually 4:4 count), it should be something catchy and repetitive. To get an idea of a drum line ... listen to any Hip Hop, Pop, or R&B song. Don't spend too much time on a drum line, most likely it will change by the time you're finished with the track. It's just a method of getting the juices flowing.

3. The next thing you want to do is come up with a melody. Now this is sometimes the hardest part of making a track. Melodies can be simple (consisting of 3-4 notes on an instrument) or they can be complex (consisting of chords, unison, notes). For instance, if you want to make an up-beat song, the melody can be simple with a few instruments; and a drum line, and easy to keep up with. If you want to make a pop track, you should come up a up-pity melody that's live and energetic. For a gangsta track, you want a rugged and dark melody. And so on.

4. Now that you have a drum line and a melody the next thing is construct the track. For instance a way to construct a track is to let the track build. Meaning, start off a few melodies, a drum line (or even no drum line) and as the song plays gradually insert the different patterns. Use variations. This gives it attitude.

5. When you "think" you're done (I say 'think' because a track never truly feels done). What you want to do is listen to the whole thing and as it plays, improv in your mind. This where the "ear" comes in. Think what instruments can be used where. What parts to take out. Basically what will make it sound better.

6. The last thing to do is...let people listen to it. Don't be offended if someone doesn't like it. This is an important step. It shows you what you can improve on, what works what doesn't and so on. But through all the criticisms, just remember to do what feels good to you. Before you know it you'll be constructing tracks in your head. The only thing is that, if you're away from your computer, you'll have to remember the track/melody long enough to construct it (lay it down). Feel the music!
